It is illegal to possess transport, or set off fireworks, other than novelty items, without a local fireworks permit as described in Title 20 Chapter 177 § 3061 - 3136. If unpermitted fireworks are found in your possession, Law Enforcement Officers can confiscate the fireworks and you may be arrested, cited to court, and face misdemeanor charges as well as a $100 fine per violation or imprisonment for no more than 30 days, or both. The Grand Isle Volunteer Fire Department only issues fireworks permits for pyrotechnic shows under the following conditions;
· Conducted by trained professionals
· Located in a location that has been approved through a site visit by the pyrotechnic company representative & Fire Department representative
· A safety plan has been established (including plans for extinguishment in the event of a fire, this will most likely involve the FD being on stand-by during the event).
· The Fireworks checklist by the Vermont Division of Fire Safety is satisfied as well as conditions of NFPA 1123
A permit for a display is required by the Chief and shall be of a character, and so located, discharged or fired as, in the opinion of the Chief, shall not be hazardous to property or endanger any person or persons. The sale, possession, use and distribution of fireworks is legal only after the permit is granted. Applications for a permit must be made at least 15 days in advance of the fireworks display by contacting the Fire Chief.
